Looking for a library in Copenhagen? Let’s find a centrally located one

It’s about so much more than books

This city is known for a lot. And that includes the weather. And those rainy days just require something extra. So why not visit one of the libraries?

The libraries in central Copenhagen offer a lot more than just shelter from the rain. Even though physical books are starting to become scarce, there is so much more. Free fast broadband, proper cafeterias, power to charge the phone, newspapers (yes, real paper!), all kinds of printing options and, not least, good opportunities to work at a desk. This makes them pure watering holes for all connected people.

Most libraries have really generous opening hours, but for occasional visitors to the city, some libraries require you to aim for the time when they are staffed to be able to enter. (Residents of the city come in with their “Health cards”.)

Hovedbiblioteket

This centrally located library is easy to pass by without really understanding that it is a library. But once inside there is no doubt. You are greeted by an excellent cafe and if you take the escalators at the top you will find nice spaces to sit down to rest or work. Clear signs show you the way to all the services offered. Open every day except Sundays.

The Black Diamond

Probably the most well-known library in Copenhagen with its striking design.
When you are walking down by the canal, this is a perfect place to take a break.

Københavns Universitetsbibliotek City Campus

Over by the botanical garden you have a smaller university library. After you pass the automatic entrance doors, you can turn left and find a lot of books about Denmark. There is fast internet connection and good workplaces here.

BIBLIOTEKET Rentemestervej

Maybe not so centrally located but this place is really into traditional books. But then I think of the design of the building which is reminiscent of stacked books! And this is in fact not just a library. It is also a cultural hub for the area.

Kunstbiblioteket Danish National Art Library

Another exciting library that many people pass by (Nyhavn and other attractions) without knowing about. And as the name suggests, it’s all about art here. The venue is classic in its design and paper books are still king here. This is just next door to Kunsthal Charlottenborg. Open only on weekdays.

Christianshavns Bibliotek

A library in Copenhagen may look unremarkable like this. But the inside is often something completely different. The nice location offers a view of the square and the canal next door.
There is no cafe here but vending machines for various drinks are available.

The old University Library in Copenhagen

This is truly the classic image of a university library from a bygone era. And here you actually get the feeling of being in some kind of Indiana Jones movie!
However for non-students, you will have to pay admission. But it’s worth it if you find old libraries exciting.

The bookcase on Islands Brygge

If you’re simply looking for some good books, there are free options scattered around the city. Here’s one on Islands Brygge where you’re sure to find something interesting. And when you’re done, return it and let someone else have the chance to read the book.
